Rate Limit

Setup

In the setup that has been used for the tests between StarLight and the Amsterdam Science Park, also some pilot rate limit tests have been executed. Therefore, at the Amsterdam Force10 switch a rate limit of 2800 Mbits/s has been configured with the following configuration command:

rate limit 2800 50 peak 2800 50 vlan VlanID
This implies that a commited-rate of 2800 Mbits/s with a burst of 50 KBytes and also a peak-rate of 2800 Mbits/s again with a burst of 50 KBytes has been configured for that interface but limited to the VLAN with ID VlanID.

Performed Experiments

In the tests presented below the influence of the configured rate limit in the direction ASP -> SL upon the test results will be compared with the results obtained for the unlimited direction SL -> ASP. Besides the usual, standard TCP and UDP bulk test flows, also TCP and UDP tests will be executed where the bandwidth of these flows are shaped as a function of the time using the triangle profile shown in . This triangle profile has been used to check for possible hysteresis effects between the areas where the bandwidth is going up and down.
