On the purpose of education:

"At school you are engaged not so much in acquiring knowledge as in making mental efforts under criticism. A certain amount of knowledge you can indeed with average faculties acquire so as to retain; nor need you regret the hours you spent on much that is forgotten, for the shadow of lost knowledge at least protects you from many illusions. But you go to a great school not so much for knowledge as for arts and habits; for the habit of attention, for the art of expression, for the art of assuming at a moment's notice a new intellectual position, for the art of entering quickly into another person's thoughts, for the habit of submitting to censure and refutation, for the art of indicating assent or dissent in graduated terms, for the habit of regarding minute points of accuracy, for the art of working out what is possible in a given time, for taste, for discrimination, for mental courage, and for mental soberness. Above all, you go to a great school for self-knowledge. "

Kosmos by Willem de Sitter

A reprint in the Amsterdam Academic Archive Series

(Amsterdam University Press, December 2010):

http://extra.volkskrant.nl/betacanon/

In Praise of Science
Curiosity, Understanding and Progress

November 2009

MIT-Press

In this engaging, lyrical book, physicist Sander Bais shows how science can liberate us from our cultural straitjacket of prejudice and intolerance. We are living in a time in which technology is taken for granted, yet belief in such standard scientific facts as evolution is actually decreasing. How is it possible for cell phones and Creationism to coexist?
Science--fundamental, fact-based knowledge, not the latest technological gadget--can give us the global and local perspectives we need to make the world a better place. After giving a lively overview of the sciences, Bais argues that turning points in the history of science have been accompanied by similar milestones in social change, deeply affecting our view of nature, our perception of the human condition, and our understanding of the universe and our place in it. Finally, Bais takes on the obstacles science encounters in a world dominated by short-term political and economic interests. Science, he says, needs to get its message out. Drawing on sources that range from Charles Darwin and Karl Popper to Herbert Marcuse and Richard Feynman, with In praise of Science, Bais does just that.

Sander Bais is Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Amsterdam and External Faculty Member of the Santa Fe Institute. He is the author of The Equations: Icons of Knowledge and Very Special Relativity: An Illustrated Guide.

Very Special Relativity
An Illustrated Guide

Very Special Relativity

Einstein s Special Theory of Relativity, first published in 1905, radically changed our understanding of the world. Familiar notions of space and time and energy were turned on their head, and our struggle with Einstein s counterintuitive explanation of these concepts was underway. The task is no easier today than it was a hundred years ago, but in this book Sander Bais has found an original and uniquely effective way to convey the fundamental ideas of Einsteins Special Theory.

Bais' previous book, The Equations, was widely read and roundly praised for its clear and commonsense explanation of the math in physics. Very Special Relativity brings the same accessible approach to Einstein s theory. Using a series of easy-to-follow diagrams and employing only elementary high school geometry, Bais conducts readers through the quirks and quandaries of such fundamental concepts as simultaneity, causality, and time dilation. The diagrams also illustrate the difference between the Newtonian view, in which time was universal, and the Einsteinian, in which the speed of light is universal.

Following Bais s straightforward sequence of simple, commonsense arguments, readers can tinker with the theory and its great paradoxes and, finally, arrive at a truly deep understanding of Einstein s interpretation of space and time. An intellectual journey into the heart of the Special Theory, the book offers an intimate look at the terms and ideas that define our reality.

The equations: Icons of knowledge

The mysteries of the physical world speak to us through equations--compact statements about the way nature works, expressed in nature's language, mathematics. In this book by the renowned Dutch physicist Sander Bais, the equations that govern our world unfold in all their formal grace--and their deeper meaning as core symbols of our civilization.

Trying to explain science without equations is like trying to explain art without illustrations. Consequently Bais has produced a book that, unlike any other aimed at nonscientists, delves into the details--historical, biographical, practical, philosophical, and mathematical--of seventeen equations that form the very basis of what we know of the universe today. A mathematical objet d'art in its own right, the book conveys the transcendent excitement and beauty of these icons of knowledge as they reveal and embody the fundamental truths of physical reality.

These are the seventeen equations that represent radical turning points in our understanding--from mechanics to electrodynamics, hydrodynamics to relativity, quantum mechanics to string theory--their meanings revealed through the careful and critical observation of patterns and motions in nature. Mercifully short on dry theoretical elaborations, the book presents these equations as they are--with the information about their variables, history, and applications that allows us to chart their critical function, and their crucial place, in the complex web of modern science.

Reading The Equations, we can hear nature speaking to us in its native language.

The physics of information

Information is carried, stored, retrieved and processed by machines, whether they be electronic computers or living organisms. All information, which in an abstract sense one may think of as a string of zeros and ones, has to be carried by a physical substrate, be it paper, silicon chips or holograms, and the handling of this information is physical, so information is ultimately constrained by the fundamental laws of physics. It is therefore not surprising that physics and information share a rich interface...

Wankel evenwicht

Research

Overview of research

The research group I have been heading focused primarily on problems in theoretical (high-energy) physics: from quantum field theory to string theory. I have made interesting excursions though, to adjacent fields like condensed matter theory and physics of the early universe.

My collaborators and I have studied and solved numerous problems concerning topological defects, like fluxes, domain walls, monopoles, skyrmions, instantons etc., and the interactions they have with the basic fields as well as with each other. In the article "Broken Symmetry Revisited."    we describe what their most important features are, and which aspects of these defects have been studied by us. In a book chapter To be or not to be I give a review the physics and mathematics of magnetic monopoles in non-abelian gauge theories.

In the last decade or so my group have focussed on a very special type of interactions between defects called "Topological interactions". In two dimensional physics these lead for example to the realization of anyonic behavior, i.e. the possibility of collective excitations which exhibit surprising, very exotic spin and quantum statistics properties. Such excitations are present in phases of matter that exhibit what is now called "topological order". Some simple examples are explained in the article   Exotische spin en statistiek eigenschappen   (yes, in Dutch!).
