PhD position in Theoretical Physics
NWO Vidi grant "Probing the Genesis of Dark Matter", GRAPPA, University of Amsterdam

Job description

One PhD position is available, starting from 1st October 2014 or later, in context of my NWO Vidi grant "Probing the Genesis of Dark Matter". The position will be hosted by GRAPPA at the University of Amsterdam and is for four years.

GRAPPA (Gravitation AstroParticle Physics Amsterdam) is a new centre of excellence of the University of Amsterdam, and a joint initiative of the Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITFA), the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy (API), and the National Institute for Subatomic Physics (Nikhef). GRAPPA was funded just a few years ago, but is becoming one of the major players in astroparticle and cosmological research in Europe and in the world. We have a diverse range of nationalities, a stimulating atmosphere in the group and an active visitor program which attracts some of the best astroparticle physicists from around the world. Details can be found here.

One of the most exciting open questions in fundamental physics and cosmology is the particle nature of dark matter (DM). Different theoretical models for DM suggest a large variety of search strategies for non-gravitational DM signals, ranging from astronomical observations and laboratory experiments to searches with particle colliders. The successful candidate will do original research in the field of DM searches. Possible projects range from the analysis of radio or gamma-ray data to the construction and systematic study of theoretical DM models in global scans.
Collaboration with other students, postdoctoral researchers and other faculty members will be encouraged. At the end of the PhD program the candidate will be an expert in at least one of the fields related to DM searches and cosmology.

Requirements

Prospective candidates should have obtained or be about to obtain a Master’s degree in theoretical physics. The candidate needs excellent background in quantum field theory and/or general relativity, and a vital interest in astronomical research. Substantial experience with one major programming language is desirable. Furthermore, candidates need to possess excellent written and oral English skills.

Application

To apply, please send your application dossiers (application letter, personal statement about background and potential research interests, curriculum vitae, degree certificate(s), two letters of recommendation) to the below address. Please make sure all your material is attached in only one pdf. The letters of recommendation should be send separately. Prospective candidates will be interviewed.
