On the one hand we want to be a world-wide forum for all kinds of activities in Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions, both pure and applied. On the other hand we are an Activity Group within SIAM, which is a US-based organisation explicitly aiming at the advancement of the applications of mathematics. Therefore we have certain obligations that the applied part of our field will get enough attention in our two news media and in our symposia. It is our impression that we have not fully met these obligations during the past few years. One reason is that most of the present officers are academia based and have their research interests in a rather theoretical direction. However, one other reason is the lack of feedback from your side. For instance, OP-SF Net is open for your contributions, but major parts of the past issues were filled by my own news gathering. It is unavoidable that this editorial news gathering is biased, because news about activities close to my research interests will reach me more probably than other news. Therefore, OP-SF Net would become more balanced if more of you, and in particular those who apply orthogonal polynomials and special functions in natural sciences, engineering, economics, etc., would contribute to the Net. It is not just announcements of meetings I would like to see, but also announcements of books, software, etc. Furthermore, please do not hesitate to send your research questions to OP-SF Net. It is quite probable that one of the readers can answer your question, or give at least a hint. From now on, OP-SF Net will also publish answers to questions posed in the Net. Finally, the officers of the Activity Group would like to hear your opinion about the direction in which the Activity Group should move. It is in particular important to hear about this in the present year, since the various officers' positions will be open for election this year. You may either write to one of the officers privately about this, or send your opinion to OP-SF Net or the Newsletter for publication. Tom Koornwinder Topic #2 ---------------- OP-SF NET ----------------- March 28, 1995 ~~~~~~~~~ From: OP-SF Net editor Subject: Analysis mini-symposium at Dutch Mathematical Congress During the 31th Dutch Mathematical Congress (April 20-21, 1995) in Groningen, The Netherlands, there will be a mini-symposium "Analysis: classical, exciting and applicable" It is organized by A.J. Hermans (Delft University of Technology) on behalf of the Dutch "Werkgemeenschap Analyse). The main speaker will be: H.G. Meijer (Delft), "Polynomials orthogonal with respect to a Sobolev inner product". The other speakers are: H. Bavinck (Delft), M.G. de Bruin (Delft), R.A. Kortram (Nijmegen), J.J.O.O. The main goal of this workshop is an exchange of information in the development of the theory of orthogonal polynomials in the non positive definite case. The following topics will be discussed: 1. Formal theory. 2. Numerical problems. 3. Non symmetric difference operators and orthogonality. 4. Vector and matrix Hermite-Pade approximants. 5. Applications Every speaker will have 40 minutes. Each lecture should have an expository part with as many references as possible. We hope that the meeting will be informal. You are kindly invited to participate in this workshop. If you want to contribute a lecture, please send us the title and a short abstract (1 page in TEX or LaTEX format) of your lecture before April 1 by e-mail or fax. Registration forms (also for hotel reservation) are available from the organizers on request. Dear Friends: Gabor Szego (more accurately G\'abor Szeg\H{o}) was born one hundred years ago on January 20, 1895, in Kunhegyes, Hungary. This is to solicit your generous donations for some type of a memorial (most likely a bronze relief to be set up in Kunhegyes in front of the city library) dedicated to Gabor Szego. I understand that such a memorial will cost in the neighborhood of three to five thousand US dollars. Please send me whatever you can afford, say, $10 or $25 or $100 or more (perhaps in cash but preferably by checks payable to Paul Nevai, Dept Math - OSU, Columbus, Ohio 43210-1174, U.S.A.) and I will make sure that all the money collected will be used for that purpose. If you send me $25 or more, you will get a photograph of this memorial signed by a selected mathematician such as Dick Askey or Paul Erdos or Samuel Karlin or Peter Lax or Lee Lorch or Gilbert Strang or Harold Widom or one of the children of Gabor Szego. Depending on the money collected, I promise to add a substantial amount from my own resources. My final goal is in the neighborhood of 5K. Sincerely, Paul Nevai P.S.
