ICIAM 95, Hamburg, July 3-7, 1995 Minisymposium "Orthogonal Polynomials and Spectral Methods" Classification No.: 102 Organizers: Francisco Marcellan (EPS Carlos III, Madrid, Spain) and Andre Ronveaux (Facultes Universitaires N.D. de la Paix, Namur, Belgium) Description: There has been much recent research on orthogonality with respect to Sobolev inner products. The analysis of spectral problems for ordinary differential operators, the asymptotic estimates for the corresponding eigenfunctions as well as the location and properties of their zeros constitute some new directions in this research. These methods can be used in the design of pseudospectral methods for the discretization of parabolic partial differential equations as well as for the design of efficient algorithms for approximation by polynomials in the underlying Sobolev space. Speakers: Arieh Iserles, University of Cambridge, England: (Tentative title) "Sobolev-orthogonal polynomials and pseudospectral methods for parabolic PDE's" Walter van Assche, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium: "Direct and inverse problems for Sobolev orthogonal polynomials" Marcel de Bruin, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands: "Sobolev-orthogonal polynomials and their zeros". Other speakers to be announced. Topic #5 -------------- OP-SF NET ------------- September 26, 1994 ~~~~~~~~~ From: Charles F.
