CV
Paulo Salles is an associate professor of Ecological Modelling and Science Education in the Institute of Biological Sciences at the University of Brasilia, Brazil, since 1991. He is graduated in Biological Sciences ('bacharelado' in 1976; 'licenciatura' in 1985); after having his MSc degree in Ecology from the University of Brasilia (1988), he moved to the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, where he was awarded a PhD in 1998 for his research on qualitative reasoning models in ecology and their use in intelligent learning environments.
At the University of Edinburgh his supervisors were Robert Muetzelfeldt on ecological modelling, in the Institute of Ecology and Resource Management, and Helen Pain on AI and Education, in the AI Department. Durant this period, he won a scholarship to spend four months in the Social Sciences and Informatics (SWI) Department, at the University of Amsterdam, working with Bert Bredeweg.
Currently, he is member of the post-graduate programs in ecology and science education at the University of Brasilia. Since March 2006 he is in the Human Computer Studies Laboratory at the University of Amsterdam for one year in a post-doctoral program.
Research interests
Research interests include ecology and artificial intelligence (particularly qualitative reasoning) applied to ecological modelling and to science education.Projects
- NaturNet-Redime, a project co-funded by the Comission of the European Communities within the Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Development (2002-2006), contract number GOCE-CT-2003-004074.
- Portugues como segunda lingua na educacao cientifica de surdos (PL2edSUR), (Portuguese as a second language in the scientific education of deaf), a project funded by the Brazilian agency CAPES. Paulo's role in this project is to develop and use qualitative reasoning models to convey ecological concepts.
- Abordagem Multiobjetivo para Decisao de Outorga (AMODOUTOR), a project funded by the Brazilian Ministerio da Ciencia e Tecnologia/CNPq/CT-HIDRO (CT-HIDRO-GRH-01/2004; Convenio. nr 3514/04), dedicated to the development of decision support systems for water management.
