Course on Lie groups and Lie algebras

Instructors Prof.dr. E.M. Opdam (room P223, email opdam@science.uva.nl) and
Dr. J.V. Stokman (room P224, email jstokman@science.uva.nl).
Prerequisites Thorough knowledge of basic Linear Algebra, Algebra and Analysis (bachelor level). Basic knowledge of elementary Differential Geometry (such as acquintance with the definitions of manifolds, tangent spaces, and local coordinate systems) is recommended.
The course is part of the Master Mathematics, and is also suitable for
4th and 5th year students in Theoretical Physics and Mathematical Physics.
Content This is an introductory course in the theory of Lie groups. We discuss some of the basic principles and concepts. In addition we treat several examples and applications in geometry and physics. Key phrases are:
-Lie groups and their Lie algebras,
-The classification of simple Lie algebras,
-Representations of Lie algebras and Lie groups,
-Homogeneous spaces,
-Fourier series on compact Lie groups.
