Computing is at one of its most exciting moments in history, playing an essential role in supporting many important human activities. However, the methodologies used by computer scientists, and the systems developed, often ignore human issues related to the use of the technology, such as the social and cultural context in which computing systems are deployed. Furthermore, the explosion in the availability of information in various forms (text, image, audio, video, etc.) and the availability of sensors (motion, heat, etc.) means on one hand that the amount of data we can collect will continue to increase dramatically, and on the other hand that we need to develop new models to search, organize, and integrate such data for human use, during interaction (to make computers more accessible and to develop novel applications) and for knowledge gathering and communication.

This issue of IEEE Computer will be devoted to Human-centered Computing. We are soliciting submissions that introduce key concepts, discuss theoretical frameworks and technical approaches, challenges, research opportunities, and open issues in areas of interest in human-centered computing, including the following areas:

(1) multimodal interaction: visual (body, gaze, gesture) and audio (emotion) analysis;

(2) image databases, indexing, and retrieval: human-centered content and context modeling;

(3) experiential, affective, cultural, and social issues in computing;

(4) machine learning with a human-in-the loop

(5) interactive search and agent interfaces

(6) multimedia collaboration and ubiquitous computing

(7) user, context, and task modeling

Submissions should be limited to 6,000 words (8 pages) with pictures counting as 300 words. Author style guidelines can be found at: http://www.computer.org/computer/contrib.html. The manuscripts should be submitted via Manuscript Central at http://cs-ieee.manuscriptcentral.com/.
