Special Issue on

Multimedia Information Retrieval

Guest Editors

Nicu Sebe, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Michael S. Lew, Leiden University, The Netherlands
Chabane Djeraba, LIFL, France

Extending beyond the borders of culture, art, and science, the search for digital information is one of the major challenges of our time. Digital libraries, bio-computing & medical science, the Internet, streaming video, databases, cultural heritage collections and peer-2-peer networks have created a worldwide need for new paradigms and techniques on how to browse, search, and summarize multimedia collections. We are soliciting high quality original papers that extend some of the selected papers that appeared in the ACM Multimedia Information Retrieval Workshop (MIR2004).

All submissions will be subject to the normal review process applied by the Journal. Anonymous experts in the field will review the paper and
the best 7-8 papers at maximum will be selected for publication in the special issue.

The special issue would be composed of original papers that address a range of issues in multimedia information retrieval including:

·        Multimedia architecture and systems,
·        Multimedia data modeling and visualization,
·        Automated semantic annotation,
·        Multi-modal human-computer interaction,
·        Semantic content analysis,
·        Intelligent agents for multimedia indexing and retrieval,
·        Tools, benchmarks, and standards,
·        Multimedia retrieval for pervasive devices,
·        New media types and new applications,
·        Multi-modal event detection and recognition,
·        Multi-modal/Multi-sensor fusion techniques

All submitted papers will be reviewed according to the guidelines and standards of the ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communication, and Applications. We prefer that the authors submit electronic versions of their papers in postscript or pdf to Nicu Sebe (nicu@science.nl). If electronic submission is not possible then five paper copies may be sent to:
