Which route would you take?

Study Description: We are interested in the different routes people take in a city, so that the next generation of route planners that support exploring cities can be built. In this study, we are focusing on two common routes in the city of Amsterdam. For each route, algorithms have been developed that generate different variations of each of those routes. Please read the scenarios below, and based on your experiences of visiting/living in Amsterdam, help us evaluate the output of these algorithms by telling us which of the routes you prefer. Thanks!

Note: Please fill out this survey only if you have been to Amsterdam (The Netherlands) at least once before. Layover at the airport doesn't count, sorry! :-)

Scenario 1

“You are at Amsterdam Central Station with some friends, and would like to go to the Museumplein. It's around 2 o’clock in the afternoon on a Saturday, and the skies are clear. You all have free time on your hands, so you decide to walk there. Before you embark on your journey, you reflect on which route to take.”

Take a look at each of the routes below that take you from Central Station to Museumplein, and try to see which one you would follow. You may feel that it is hard to give a judgment on an entire route -- in this case, just give an answer that covers the highest segment of a route. Keep in mind that there is no right or wrong answer. Your personal opinion is what counts!

Scenario 2

“You are at the Waterlooplein with a good friend who has just come back from a vacation. You would like to catch up, and decide to go have a few drinks somewhere near the Westerkerk. It is around 7 o’clock in the evening on a Sunday, with some clouds in the sky (but no rain!). You two decide to walk there. Before you embark on your journey, you reflect on how you want to get there.”

Take a look at each of the routes below that take you from Waterlooplein to Westerkerk, and try to see which one you would follow. You may feel that it is hard to give a judgment on an entire route -- in this case, just give an answer that covers the highest segment of a route.
