Issues in Qualitative Model Building

Issues in Qualitative Model Building

Samenvatting

A number of tools exist that allow people to build knowledge models of system's behaviour. These tools use different screens and visualisations to work with. However, the additional support learners need to have for a successful modelling event have not yet been analysed. This thesis describes an experimental study, which was carried out at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The study analyses model building activities of learners using Homer. Homer is a tool for building qualitative models of system's behaviour. The goal of the research project was to discover how to support students in building qualitative models effectively. Different kinds of support were given to subjects when they used Homer to build qualitative models during the experiment. Problems and difficulties subjects encountered while constructing these qualitative models have been identified. These problems and difficulties have been analysed in order to produce requirements for the construction of modelling tools that effectively support students in performing such a task.
