Research Experience

Structured Retrieval. Examined the use of structure to improve multimedia retrieval, quantifying how retrieval of shot units can be enhanced by incorporating speech from the story units in which they are enveloped. Demonstrated that the weighting of shot and story speech remains relatively constant across different language modeling settings.

Text Transformation. Investigated the extent to which text transformations such as character n-gramming, word n-gramming, and stemming can be used to improve speech-based multimedia news retrieval. Showed that a best-of-breed combination approach results in significant improvement of retrieval performance.

Temporal Distribution. Currently exploring the temporal relationship between the occurrence of an object in the visual channel, and its occurrence in the speech channel of multimedia news broadcasts.
