I'm a postdoctoral researcher at the Information and Language Processing Systems Laboratory (ILPS), a research group within the Informatics Institute at the University of Amsterdam.
Currently I'm working on a project called de Krant van Morgen, or Tomorrow's Newspaper. Here I'm looking at new methods of opening up newspaper archives for exploration, especially through connecting the text and images of newspaper articles with associated people, locations, companies, television programs, and more.
I defended my PhD thesis on the 26th of November of 2010. Rather than newspapers, the thesis is focused on the subject of opening up television broadcast archives to media professionals. It details my studies of real-world archive use, and novel search algorithms for improving audiovisual search results. My thesis can be accessed here.
