Sport

I don't think of myself as being particularly interested in sports, but I do do a fair amount of running and bicycling. In high school, I ran cross-country (on a team that was perennially one of the best in the state) and track, but I never got very good (5:20 1600, barely sub-12:00 3200, and just-over 18:00 5K).

In graduate school, I took up bicycling, primarily on the road, with touring oriented groups (like the Western Wheelers and the Rochester Bicycle Club), although I also had fun in the snowy Rochester winters riding the TNUA rides. At one point, I started putting together a page on my bicycles, but that hasn't gotten very far.

Since moving to Amsterdam, I've done a couple of long rides (including a two-day trip along the IJsselmeer coast to Den Helder (100mi) and then around Texel and down the North Sea coast (200km)). But, despite the vibrant bicycle culture here, the lack of mountains, or even hills, has led me to turn from bicycling back to running. I ran the 7km recreational run in the Dam tot Damloop (28:00 clock time) in September, 2004, as part of training for the Amsterdam Marathon in October, 2004. I did run the marathon and managed to finish in under four hours (3:44:09 chip time). And I think I might even do it again, although I've let my training slip since then. I did run the 4mi New Year's Eve Run in Central Park, New York, at midnight (28:43 by own watch), but I don't have any immediate plans for more racing soon.
